The 2 hour drive to Death Valley was pretty cool. There were signs like "WARNING! Extreme heat danger ahead!" And "Last stop before Death Valley". We passed a grave marked by a wooden cross by the side of the road and I thought, "who the hell would be stupid enough to wonder out here and die". The tops of the mountains were literally smoking, it must have been forest fires. But in our air conditioned car we were safe and cool. I was worried that the tyres might melt but I think we'll be ok.
When you step out of the car the hot wind knocks you back and makes your eyes sting. It's pleasant, like a windy sauna, but only for about 5minutes then it's definitely time to go inside.
Furnace Creek ranch was cool. it looks like something from a Cowboys and Indians film with rocking chairs outside the chalets and a museum with old wagons and trains.
